Unique Pull Apart Cheese Crackers

They are a great way to serve warm crispy crackers with pepperoni, tomato sauce and melty mozzarella cheese. The title says it all: pull apart pepperoni pizza crackers. We were inspired from our party seasoned ranch crackers recipe. Take a layer of crackers, add your favorite tomato sauce, cheese and pepperoni. Bake it and there you have it: a tray of delicious pull apart cracker sandwiches with pepperoni pizza toppings.

Easy Cheesy Pull Apart Cracker Recipe

These are like addicting cracker appetizers but they’re pull apart with melted cheese, which is even better. It’s a big tray of crackers all connected together with pizza toppings. And what’s even better is that they’re extra crispy and warm when you serve them straight from the baking dish. You can buy the popular keebler sandwich crackers with cheese or make them yourself. After making a batch, you’ll never buy them again. Warm and homemade is always better.

What’s Better? Seasoned Crackers vs. Plain Crackers

You can use simple unseasoned saltine crackers or even pre-seasoned crackers. Anything with seasoning will already bring tons of flavor to these homemade pull apart cracker sandwiches. We did several tests on different crackers and found that when we made the seasoned saltine crackers first, the end results was a much better tasting pull apart cracker. Also, using square crackers are better because the sides can all touch against each other to hold in the cheese while baking. Then the pull apart cheesy moment happens when you eat.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 lb. (227 g) saltine crackers (2 sleeves) (or cracker/cracker combo of choice)
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) neutral tasting oil , vegetable oil, grapeseed oil, canola oil, or popcorn oil
  • .5 oz. (15 g) ranch seasoning packet , usually 1/2 packet (about 1 1/2 Tablespoons-(22 ml))
  • 2 teaspoons (10 ml) dried Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) onion powder
  • 1/2-3/4 cup (120-180 ml) pizza sauce or marinara sauce
  • 1-2 cups (115-230 g) grated cheese  (good melting cheeses like mozzarella, provolone, gouda, cheddar, etc.)
  • about 36 slices pepperoni , if bigger than the crackers you can cut them in smaller pieces

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or foil.

  • In a large plastic bag (we like to use a 1 or 2 gal. ziplock bag) or very large bowl combine all the crackers.
    unseasoned crackers in bag
  • Combine the 1/2 cup of oil and all the seasonings (.5 oz ranch seasoning, 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, and 1 teaspoon onion powder). Stir until well combined.

  • Pour the seasoned oil into the bag of crackers. Don’t just dump the oil seasoning in one spot over the crackers. Pour it evenly over the crackers that are in the bag.

  • If using a bag, seal the bag but make sure to leave a bunch of air in the bag so the crackers have room to move around. Gently turn and tumble the crackers so the seasoning can completely coat the crackers.

  • Place the seasoned crackers in a single, even layer on the prepared baking sheet pan. Have the sides of the crackers touching.

  • Top the crackers with a light layer of cheese. This first layer of cheese keeps the cracker from getting soggy from the sauce.

  • Dollop a light layer of sauce over each cracker. Don't put too much. Will make the crackers soggy.

  • Top with a little more cheese. This will melt and help pepperoni stick to the cracker.

  • Top with the pepperoni on each cracker.

  • Bake at a 350°F (175°C) for about 15 minutes or until the cheese is golden. Serve warm while cheese is still melty.

Let the Crackers Cool a Bit!

It’s hard to not dive into these crackers right away because the sooner you eat them, the more melted cheese you get. So if you’re impatient and want to serve these hot and straight out of the oven, there’s some things to consider:

  • Make sure to put a hot towel over the edges of the hot baking pan. That way if you’re serving these cheesy warm crackers right out of the oven, you don’t want anyone to burn themselves while reaching into grabbing a cracker.
  • OR you can lay some foil or parchment under the crackers. Then when you take the crackers out of the oven, just slide the foil or parchment base with the crackers onto over onto a cutting board.
  • After everything has cooled, then you can dive into these pull apart pepperoni pizza crackers
