Easy Dumpling Soup Recipe with Frozen Dumplings, Potstickers, Gyoza or Wontons

Why is this simple dumpling soup so quick and easy? It’s because we’re using frozen dumplings! With so many options out there in the markets, the quality has been amazing. There’s so many different brands and they’re all so good! From Trader Joe’s popular frozen gyoza potstickers or other dumpling brands, there’s no reason to judge and look down on frozen dumplings.

What’s the difference between potstickers, dumplings, gyoza or wontons?

There’s the big category of Asian style stuffed dumplings that everyone is familiar with. This is the general term that most folks use to describe these little pockets of savory filled meats or veggies. Potstickers and gyoza are the general term for the ones that are seared on a pan with a crispy base or edge. Wontons are typically smaller and used for brothy soups. But now with the popularity of Dumplings, they’re called so many different things and with different uses. You’ll see potstickers floating in soups and wontons seared on a pan or in a bed of chili sauce. What ever they’re called, we just buy the ones that we like the filling the best.

How Do you Know When Dumplings, Potstickers or Wontons are cooked?

Well if you’re buying them frozen, the filling should already be cooked. Typically when the dumplings float to the top of the broth during cooking, then they should be ready to eat. That means the dumplings are heated through. But be careful before biting into these hot dumplings. They’re like heat bombs so be careful to not burn your tongue!

Can you freeze leftovers?

Sure you can, but don’t do it. It’s a smaller portion and try to eat it within 2-3 days. Store it in the fridge. Freezing it will only make the dumplings mushy when it’s thawed. That’s why our recipe is for a smaller batch cause it’s made to be eaten sooner than later.
